Sir Balin le Savage, also known as the Knight with the Two Swords was a knight from Northumberland. He was in King Arthur's service before the formation of the Knights of the Round Table. After his release from prison, where he was held for the death of Arthur's cousin, Balin won a sword from a mysterious damsel in a competition. This sword, which plays another role later in the legend, brings a curse upon Balin.
Sir Balin sets out to destroy a villain knight, who happens to be brother of King Pellam. In a subsequent battle with Pellam, Balin unknowingly uses Spear of Longinus to perform Dolorous Stroke, which maims Pellam and turns the Grail Kingdom into Wasteland.
Finally, as a result of the sword curse, Sir Balin and his brother, Sir Balan, are engaged in a battle, without knowing they are fighting one another. They mortally wound each other and die on the same battlefield.
